What this calculator does not account for
- Heating varies strongly by season — the monthly figure is a yearly average, not a January bill.
- The estimate mode uses German averages and therefore exists only for the Germany region. For the US there is no national source for water and sewer.
- Build-year benchmarks are class averages. A refurbished 1960s building uses far less than the figure for "before 1977".
- Gas is calculated in m³ here. Your bill states kilowatt hours — the conversion factor is printed on it and is usually around 10.
- Heating oil and district heating are not covered; enter them in place of gas if you need to.
- Regional grid fees and municipal charges differ considerably.
- Year-end settlements, whether owed or refunded, are not modelled.

Divide your monthly total by the floor area of your home. A 1,500 square foot house at 300 dollars a month works out at 0.20 dollars per square foot. The figure is only meaningful next to a comparable home, because climate, insulation and the age of the building move it far more than size does.
