Planning Tips
- Use your actual home electricity tariff from your latest bill for better estimates.
- For public charging, use a realistic average from the stations you use most often.
- Recheck inputs every few months because usage mix and charging prices can change.
How it is calculated
Formula
Energy needed = (miles per month × consumption per 100 mi) ÷ 100 Charging cost = home share × home price + public share × public price + fees Cost per mi = charging cost ÷ miles per month
What this calculator does not account for
- Charging losses between socket and battery are not included — 5 to 15 % in practice.
- Consumption varies a lot with temperature, speed and load.
- Idle fees and time-based pricing at fast chargers are not modelled.
- Your own solar power is only reflected if you enter it as the home price.
About This Calculator
The EV Charging Cost Calculator estimates your true charging spend by combining monthly distance, vehicle efficiency, and your home-vs-public charging split. It adds kWh pricing and optional fixed monthly charging fees so you can see realistic monthly, annual, and per-mile cost.
How to Use This Calculator
- 1
Enter your monthly driving distance and your EV efficiency in kWh per 100 mi.
- 2
Set how much charging you do at home versus public stations as a percentage split.
- 3
Add home and public kWh prices, plus any monthly public session fees or charger allocation.
- 4
Review monthly and annual charging totals, blended kWh price, and cost per 100 mi.
Why Use This Calculator
Plan Charging Budgets
Estimate charging spend before costs drift so your monthly EV budget stays predictable.
Compare Charging Mixes
Test home-heavy versus public-heavy usage to see how charging behavior changes total cost.
Track Cost per Mile
Measure effective cost per mi and per 100 mi to compare EV use against other transport options.
Frequently Asked Questions
Use your own trip computer average if possible. If not, start with your manufacturer estimate and adjust after collecting real-world data across a few weeks.
Look at your recent charging sessions. Estimate what percentage of your monthly kWh is charged at home and set the remainder as public charging.
Yes. Include monthly network fees, session fees, or access plans in the fixed-fee field so your total reflects real out-of-pocket cost.
No. Enter your average home and public kWh prices, and the calculator gives reliable totals without extra tariff setup.
Update whenever your energy tariff, charging habits, or monthly distance changes materially. A quick monthly check keeps estimates accurate.
No. This tool focuses on charging spend. Use ownership or maintenance calculators separately if you want full vehicle cost modeling.
